8 things you did not know about Moscow

Description & Facts: Moscow is the capital city of Russia with about 10,500,000 people. It is the most populous city in Europe and in the country and is a major political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation center not only of Russia but also of the world. It is a megacity and seventh largest in the world. It’s location is strategic – located at Moskva river in the Central Federal District. Moscow has been in the center of attention throughout history but mostly during and after the World War Two. During the War the attention was on stopping Nazi troops advancing during the Blitz Krieg and thus enabling the Allied forced to gather their strength to take charge on the Western front. After the was there was the tension between the West and the East with the centers in Washington D.C. on one hand and Moscow on the other. This capital is still a major player in economical, political and other theatres.

Things You Did not know

1.The city was named after river Moscow.
2. In July 2010 Moscow marked a record 37.7 degrees Celsius making it the hottest period in 130 years
3. The city of Moscow is divided into 10 administrative okrugs and 123 districts.
4. The name Red Square (a city square) derives neither from the colour of the bricks around it (which, in fact, were whitewashed at certain points in history) nor from the link between the colour red and communism. Rather, the name came about because the Russian word krasnaya can mean either "red" or "beautiful" (the latter being archaic). This word, with the meaning "beautiful", was originally applied to Saint Basil's Cathedral and was subsequently transferred to the nearby square. It is believed that the square acquired its current name (replacing the older Pozhar, or "burnt-out place") in the 17th century. Several ancient Russian towns, such as Suzdal, Yelets, and Pereslavl-Zalessky, have their main square named Krasnaya ploshchad, namesake of Moscow's Red Square.
5. The most titled ice hockey team in the Soviet Union and in the world, HC CSKA Moscow comes from Moscow.
6. Moscow had more winners at the USSR and Russian Chess Championship than any other city. Some of them were the best players in the world.
7. The Moscow Metro which consists of 12 lines and 182 stations is one of the deepest subway systems in the world; for instance the Park Pobedy station, completed in 2003, at 84 metres (276 ft) underground, has the longest escalators in Europe. The Moscow Metro is one of the world's busiest metro systems, serving more than nine million passengers daily. Facing serious transportation problems, Moscow has extensive plans for expanding the Moscow Metro.
8. In 2008 Moscow was the most expensive city in the world.
