Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) - Father's Funeral |
Description & Facts: I loved the song Amazing Grace arranged by Chris Tomlin, but didn't think it was really good for a funeral "as is"...so I substituted the last verse for another one that John Newton wrote...which was a beautiful verse for a funeral. It turned out that not only was it beautiful for a funeral...it was perfect for my father's. He had been troubled by his heart for at least the last 30 years of his life...and probably longer. The doctors were amazed at how long he lived...I think though that it was God who allowed him to live as long as he did so that someone close to him could share the good news about how he could know that he had eternal life. It was with great joy and sorrow that I sang this to honor my father one last time. (please forgive the audio level at the beginning, the funeral home had the music turned down to start with...it does get louder) Lyrics below... Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed! My chains are gone I've been set free My God, my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood His mercy reigns Unending love, Amazing grace The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. My chains are gone I've been set free My God, my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood His mercy
