After processing the new citizens would board boats and ferries that would take them on the last leg of their long journeys to the Battery on Lower Manhattan. One third of all immigrant arrivals settled in or near New York. The rest made their ways to the rest of the country. Ellis Island is in Upper New York Bay, near the coast of New Jersey.
