Description & Facts: LCA is well known to
aviation enthusiasts all over the world and, from a photographic point of view, it offers excellent opportunities to capture good images – especially from the south eastern corner, where
McKenzie Beach runs adjacent to the airport boundary close to the threshold of Runway 22. This beach is very popular with tourists, many of whom top up their tans while watching the aircraft coming and going. Taking photographs of airliners on finals for Runway 22 couldn’t be easier and a 150-200mm zoom lens is all that is required to capture good shots. Late afternoon and early evening are ideal times for taking photographs from here, as the light conditions are at their best. However, the local police are sensitive to people wandering up to the fence with their cameras, although they are more tolerant of those taking approach shots. There are plenty of local tavernas from which to spot from, and owners are friendly and helpful towards enthusiasts who want to spend a few days here. LCA is busiest on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays and, because of its location, it makes an ideal overnight stop for
ferry and delivery flights to and from both
Asia and
Africa – you might even be luck enough to catch an aircraft passing through. Also flying here are freighter operators delivering cargo to the island, a number of small private airlines flying mainly from destinations in the Middle East plus the occasional military movement.
There is always something unusual and exotic to see at LCA – so, if you are looking for something a little different then
Larnaca International is to be recommended.
