Opis mesta: Traffic has also fallen off since September 11, 2001, and although hopes were high that considerable business would be generated by neighboring Korea and other countries visiting Japan, did not account for much traffic increase.

Operation

Nagoya is jointly run by the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Transport Ministry and the military – the latter being responsible for around one third of the airport’s total 35,437,534 sq ft (3,292,147 m2) area. The single runway is 9,000ft (2,740m) long and the apron takes in 3,612,885 sq ft (335,637 m2). There are 17 parking spots for the aircraft up to 747 size, three for medium size aircraft and another seven for smaller jets.

The passenger and cargo terminal belong to NATB, the company being jointly owned by the regional and local governments of Aichi Prefecture and the City of Nagoya, and the Nagoya Railroad Company at the head of 20 other private companies. A three-floor 262,000 sq ft (24,340 m2) Domestic Terminal and five-floor 770,035 sq ft (71,536m2) International Terminal serve the airport. The latter, which cost Yen 18 billion ($148,6 million) and was designed to handle 4.5 million passengers annually, has seven airbridge-equipped gates. An eighth gate serves as a collection point for buses serving the other aircraft stands.

Gate occupancy is not really a problem (except for wide-bodies on Monday mornings before 9.30am), as international flights peak at different times of the day and departures are timed to give the best arrival times at the destination (for example Australasia-bound flights leave late at night). The domestic terminal has five airbridge gates and a sixth for bus-to-plane embarkation. The last construction work to be carried out in the terminal was an expansion of the lobby area on the ground floor arrivals level. A regular free shuttle bus connects the two terminals. Both terminals have a limited selection of eating establishments, although, those in the domestic terminal tend to cater specifically for Japanese tastes and may not appeal to Westerners.

Cargo has grown at a phenomenal rate over the last decade. The 53,000 tons handled in 1990 rose to nearly 153,000 tons by 1995, and to 180,000 tons in 2000. Although separate domestic and international cargo terminals are in use, these can barely cope with the growth in traffic – particularly in international cargo, which now accounts for over a third of total freight. Between six and 14 freighter flight to/from China or Southeast Asia are handled per week, most of them operated by Boeing wide-bodied types.

Scheduled services

Fukuoka is the most popular domestic destination.Fourteen daily services are operated by rivals <storng>JAL and ANA, the specific type scheduled varying between the B737-500 and B767-300 depending on demand and on the time of a day. Only two fewer frequencies a day are provided to Sapporo on Hokkaido Island, and on this route, too, the two main Japanese carriers currently battle it out, supplemented by Japan Air Systems (JAS), using MD-81 aircraft. The other main domestic jet operators are JAL regional airline J-Air which flies CRJ 200s on five routes (including code-sharing with JAL to Tokyo-Narita), and JAL Express, whose B737-400s fly twice daily to Kagoshima, on Kyushu. J-Air also operates a daily BAe Jetstream turboprop schedule to Izumo. Other services are provided by Air Nippon, which operates B737-500s to Ishigaki, part of the Nansei chain of islands to the southwest, and JAS flying to Kushiro (on Hokkaido), Aomori, Hanamaki, Sendai, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto (on Kyushu). The sole all-turboprop operator is NAL Nakanihon Airlines, using a fleet of Fokker 50s to seven domestic destinations, including a twice-daily ANA code-shared service to Tokyo/Narita.

Seoul, South Korea, remains the most popular of all Nagoya’s international destinations, handeling over 600,000 passengers in 2001, nearly twice as many as any other international route. Both major Korean airlines – Asiana and Korean Air – operate daily: the Asiana service is code-shared with its Star Alliance partner ANA, and JAL also provides a daily flight. Korean Air also serves Busan (formerly known as Pusan, Korea’s major industrial port), and the island of Cheju.

The next most popular international destinations are Honolulu and the US island dependencies of Guam and Saipan. Although ANA ceased its Hawaii service after 9/11, JALways operates a B747 to Honolulu and a DC-10-40 or B767-200 to Guam, while Continental Micronesia flies to Guam and Saipan using B737-800s.

Some of the less familiar Chinese airlines serve Nagoya: China Northwest operates drom Xian and China Northern flies twice weekly to Dalian. The latter is the seventh Chinese destination for Nagoya – and the newest, services having begun on April 19, 2002. Indeed, traddic to China ws the airport’s largest source of growth in 2001.
