Description & Facts: Durban is a city of about 4 million on South Africa's east coast in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It is no longer just a holiday/resort city, boasting industry and Africa's busiest container port. Durban was originally called Port Natal, and was founded by British settlers. Indian workers were brought in to work the sugar cane plantations, making this one of the largest population centres of Indians in South Africa. Zulu is the most common local language in both KwaZulu-Natal and Durban. Afrikaans features far less in Durban (and in KZN in general) than in the rest of the country.
